Fix credit report errors
Credit reports aren't perfect. Information can be reported wrong, mixed up with someone else's, or left out of date. The good news is you have a legal right to get genuine mistakes fixed, and it doesn't cost you a cent. Here's how to do it.
Step 1: Get a copy of your report
Start by grabbing a free copy of your credit report so you can see exactly what's listed. The OAIC says you're entitled to a free copy every three months from each credit reporting body. We can also assist with obtaining a copy of your credit file for you at a cost.
Step 2: Ask for a correction
If something looks wrong, you can ask for it to be fixed. The OAIC says you can contact either the lender that listed the information or any credit reporting body. There's a handy "no wrong door" rule here: if the one you contact can't fix it themselves, they have to check with the others to sort it out. You don't pay for any of this.
When you ask, be clear about what's wrong and include anything that backs you up, like statements, receipts or letters. If you're helping someone affected by family violence, fraud or identity theft, a third party can request corrections on their behalf.
Step 3: Check the outcome
If they agree the information is wrong, they fix it. If they're not satisfied it's wrong, they have to write to you and explain why, and tell you that you can take it further. To confirm a change was made, just request a fresh copy of your report.
Step 4: Escalate if you're not happy
If you're not satisfied with the response, or you don't get one, you can make a complaint. The OAIC sets out the order:
- First, complain to the lender or credit reporting body. They should generally decide within 30 days.
- Next, if you're still not happy, go to the free, independent Australian Financial Complaints Authority (AFCA).
- Finally, you can complain to the OAIC in writing if you'd rather go straight to the regulator.
There's free help if you want it
If you'd like a hand, we are here to help. There are also free financial counsellors, the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 is a great place to start.
Where a service like Perfect Score fits
You can absolutely do this yourself, and we'll always tell you when something is a free fix. Where people tend to get stuck is knowing whether a listing was even done correctly in the first place, gathering the right evidence, and managing the back-and-forth. That's the part we take off your plate, and we pair it with education so your profile keeps improving afterwards. As an Australian Credit Licence holder and AFCA member, we work inside the same rules described above.
Not sure if something on your file is an error or a correct listing? We're partnered with Ausloans Finance Group and Drive Approved to help you get finance-ready. Book a free, no-obligation assessment.
